How to Properly Light Up your Space
Lighting is one of the most important aspects in interior design which more often than not is being underestimated. But if properly used, lighting can dramatically change the whole aesthetic and uplift the mood of a room. Lighting also enhances colors and textures and it even affects the perception of size and space. In fact lighting can sometimes make or break the entire look of your interior design. It is best to know how to strategically use and place light fixtures. Here are some tips to consider in setting up your lighting for different rooms in your home to fully utilize the room’s functionality.
Living Area
Living rooms are usually the place where you spend the most time. Therefore, it should provide the functionality and strategic lighting that works for you. Since the living room is a place for various family activities such as watching TV, gathering, reading and conversation, and even working on a computer it should come along with good lighting for such activities. A combination of different light sources can be used for living rooms to provide functional lighting for different activities. First consider the amount of natural light that comes through the room. After which you can add other lighting such as recessed lights, floor lamp, wall sconces and accent light. Dimmable lights also function well to adjust the ambiance depending on your activity or mood.
Dining
Your dining room’s focal point is the table which should be beautifully illuminated with proper lighting. This can be done by placing a chandelier or pendant light right above the table. You may also consider wall lightings that are dimmable if you are for the candle-light effect while you enjoy meals.
Kitchen
Lightings for your kitchen should provide both functionality and aesthetic. For kitchens you will need enough ambient light and additional task lights for working areas such as counters and cooking areas. Most common but functional lighting you can add are pendant lights. You can place these above the kitchen counter. You may also use underlight on cabinets for cooking or preparation. It is also beneficial if you have a window placed above the kitchen sink to provide natural lighting during day time then mounted lighting above the sink to use at night.
Bedroom
Bedrooms usually have ambient lighting to provide you relaxation after a long day. Ambient lighting can be provided by floor lamps, wall sconces, or a recessed light with dimmer controls. Task light can also be added such as bedside table lamps for reading and other tasks. If you decide to add ceiling-mounted light, one tip is to avoid placing it directly over the bed. Doing this may provide harsh light when lying down.
Bathroom
Things to consider for proper bathroom lighting are comfort, safety, function and aesthetic. Bathroom lights should be bright enough and even shadow free to properly see yourself for your grooming/cleansing routine. This also helps in providing a clean look to the room. It should also provide a sense of relaxation and comfort as well. The most common lighting design for a bathroom is placing ample lighting on the side or above the mirror. This is to properly see yourself without the worry of awkward shadows.
Hallways/Stairs/Entryways
The entry point or hallways of your home should feel warm and welcoming. This is in order to make sure it leaves a good impression from your guests. To achieve this you should have ambient lighting for space visibility which a simple recess or ceiling-mounted lights could suffice. You may also use wall sconce or hanging lights for these spaces. Accent light can also be added if you have artwork or framed photos you want to highlight along your walkway.
